The last time I was here (Fernando) Nini, the landlord was drumming /jamming with a guy on guitar called Georg Scheele. The sound was amazing and with the video player projecting images onto a large screen and the musicians, the whole experience was quite mesmerizing. I am looking forward to hearing them play together again very soon.

Nini the landlord is asking for local musicians to come and have a jamming session on Friday nights.

Bring you’re guitar, drum or whatever instrument you enjoy playing and some friends and have a great night at the Roxy Bar in Alferce.

Hopefully this will lead to regular music nights where bands, local musicians, and solo artists will be able to promote their music and entertain an audience.

Drew Nelson played at No8 Cafe Launceston

Colin Hill sent me an email to tell me about the next musician he had lined up at No8 Cafe  and he seemed really excited. Now I know why. Drew played on Independence Day last year at no8 and he was very well received and still remembered by many.

Drew mentioned at one point that he felt that playing again at No8, was like coming back to a place where he knew he was amongst friends. That’s nice.

Drew Nelson grew up in MIchigan and later joined the Navy and travelled the world. Returning from his travels around the globe he saw the old familiar small town communities through a different pair of eyes.

Drew’s songs are inspired by ordinary everyday events, hometown, travelling the road, friends and family. politics, economics and eavesdropping. Whilst talking with Drew he said that some songs come to him in a flash, whilst other songs may sit around for years before going out to the public. Sometimes he felt inspired by catching snippets of conversation. I can almost imagine Drew sitting in a cafe listening to the chatter around him and thinking to himself “can you talk a little louder please, I am trying to write a song”!

Drew proved he could come up with a spontaneous song when he opened the window and the sound of workmen sawing timber and  local girls laughing and talking as they walked  by on the pavement below, entered the room .  Drew closed the window and started to sing. If he ever produces a song called “Jigsaws and Cornish Girls”  you know where it came from!

  Drew places his songs in two categories. Happy and sad. We were privaleged to to find out that some songs he  sang for us tonight were sung for the first time ever and in fact one song was only two days old! Drew introduced  each song by telling us about the source of inspiration,  which always make the song understandable and gives meaning to the lyrics.

Some times when listening to a person sing you can say oh he sounds like……and come up with name, sometimes when listening to a song you may think of a style and draw comparisons, well all I can say is that Drew Nelson sounds like……Drew Nelson, and his style of music is very much like that of… Drew Nelson. He is funny, pleasant, friendly, approachable and very entertaining. He is a brilliant musician, singer and songwriter.

Graham Sleeman who provided all the equipment and monitored the sound,said people like Drew were easy to do the sound for because the instrument and the voice were so good, that once the sound desk was set up there was very little to do except enjoy the music. 

Drew makes his own instruments and he said as he tuned the guitar that it thought it was still a tree, meaning it still had life in it. It was certainly alive in Drews hands. His guitar sounded lovely and I thought a couple of times is the man playing the guitar or the guitar playing the man?  Perfect partners.

 After Drew had played his encore, he was busy signing the CD’s which he had for sale, along with sweatshirts, the proceeds of which go directly to a very worthy cause…. the Mortgage! I took a poster off the wall which Drew kindly autographed for me. Thank you very much Drew.

Drew Nelson has a deep spiritual conection with the planet Earth and the people who live on it and call it home. When I think of home I think of it as “Here On Mother Earth” I am sure Drew would agree. Native American Indian influences come across very strongly in the song “Grand Mother Moon” and “Raindance.” Drew has seen first hand the damage and destruction caused by large companies seeking only profit, caring little about the environment or the displacement of  local people who watch their lands disappear.

 Jamie “The Boss” Murphy kindly asked me if I would like to come along to the gig and I gladly accepted the offer. With Jamie driving, Vicky in the front passenger seat, myself, several boxes of equipment including speakers, mixing desk, mic stands, guitars and miles of electrical cable in the back, we set off for Truro to meet up with Todd, Robbie and Geddy.

 Next was unloading all the equipment, setting up the stage and doing a sound check. This can take a surprising amount of time. I was feeling like an apprentice roadie and enjoying the buzz of it all as I helped to carry in bits of drum kit, extension leads, guitars, PAs, stands for this and that and many other items of musical paraphernalia.

After all the equipment was plugged in,switched on, checked and double checked they played the first song of the evening which was also a sound check. A bit of tweaking on the sound desk and they were set to go. Time for a quick break before starting for real.

Jamie didn’t have a sound technician this evening but asked if I would stand behind the desk and keep an eye on things. After showing me which knobs and sliders I could and couldn’t fiddle with, which member of the band was connected to what and most importantly, where the panic button was, he took his place, gave a nod to the others and another night of great music began.

The apprentice roady/sound techie put his pint of Pear Cider down on the floor out of harms way (even an apprentice knows that electronics and liquids don’t mix very well, no matter what the flavour is) glanced at all members of the band to see who was trying to get his attention. No one. Only Jamie who glanced across occasionally to give a reassuring smile.

Some girls were happily dancing in the far corner, an older guy was extremely active on the dance floor obviously thoroughly enjoying himself and amusing the onlookers. I relaxed, sipped my pint, enjoyed the music and took some photos.

Several members of the audience gave comments throughout the evening praising the band and especially Vicki’s singing.

After a couple of hours or so listening to some great cover versions of popular music the evening came to an end. Contact details exchanged, people drifted away, the equipment was packed away into vehicles, a bit of handshaking and we were off. Leaving the current Capital of Cornwall to head back to the ancient Capital of Launceston. We stopped at Hamburger Hill where Jamie treated us to a much needed grub up. Cheers Jamie. Thank you very much.

Six is Out is based in Launceston because that’s where “The Boss” lives. However, Todd, George and Vicki are moving to Exeter where they will commute to and from Plymouth when starting the next years music degrees. Jamie will remain in Launceston but study in Plymouth and Robbie will stay in Penzance continuing his music degree in Truro. 

Six is Out will be playing in Launceston on the 25th September supported by local lads The Metro Men

A night of poetry in Liberty House Launceston

Thursday 9th September at Jericho’s in Liberty House in Launceston is Poetry and Prose night. This is an evening of poetry inspired by Janet Guest
The first Poetry and Prose evening at Jericho’s was held on Thursday 22nd July.
Janet has a great love of poetry and entertained the audience by reading poems by Pam Ayers, Charles Causley and Rudyard Kipling amongst others. Janet also read some funny poems she had written herself.

I remember as a kid, standing with my back to the wall and gently throwing a smallish stone back over my head to see if it would land (and stay) on Mary’s back.  The carving of Mary can be found on the end wall of the St Mary Magdalene church. The story is that a stone lodged on her back will bring good luck.

Alan Guest also told  some stories about his dad Ken and the life’s lessons and inspirations he had learnt from him and how he hopes to share them with you.

John Bailey read a piece called “here are two stories”.

This will become a regular event to be held on the second Thursday of each month.
Come along and listen and if you would like to share a story, read a poem or piece of literature that would be great.

You can bring a drink with you or tea, coffee, soft drinks and a selection of Mels home made cakes will be available for purchase.

Check out this great line up at the next Acoustic Cafe

 Jericho’s Brasserie in Liberty house Launceston was packed out again on Thursday evening because of the Acoustic Cafe which is held on the last Thursday of every month. This venue is so popular that people are booking tables for the September 30th event already!

The Metro Men

 Frederick has a great voice and for tonights set he sang covers of  ”Love will tear us apart”  by The Joy Division, “Knocking on heavens door” by Bob Dylan, “Behind blue eyes” by The Who, and two of  their own original songs “Coffee shop blues” and “Like a Storm” by The Metro Men. These guys will be supporting Jamie Murphy and his band Six is Out at Jericho’s on the 25th September. Come along for an excellent night out in Launceston

All the bands and musicians were excellent and gave the audience a great night of entertainment.

Mel as usual laid on a massive amount of fabulous food and good night was had by all.

Launceston’s  Acoustic Cafe on 29th July was a roaring success.

Hannah, Issac and Marcus gave a great performance at Jerichos Acoustic Cafe in Launceston

The first group to kick off the evening were the ever popular Hannah Dawe on vocals and keyboard, Marcus Cole vocals and guitar and Issac Haynes on Congas and vocals.  These three friends from Launceston college gave a great performance as they always do.   For this evening  they played  a couple of original songs, one called “Hit and Run” to which Hannah wrote the lyrics and Marcus and Issac added the music, another was  Hannah’s song called ”Miss Lonely”  

Hannah said she loves to write her own material so I am hoping to hear some more new songs in the near future. She  also has ambitions reguarding her future within the music scene and I wish her the best of luck with everything she does.

The set also included  their cover versions of “California”, “Shine”, “Only exception” and the one that really surprised us was their version of  “If you got the money”. This was a brilliant performance that got the audience clapping and cheering and raised the atmosphere by several degrees.   

Hannah, Marcus and Issac are always very enthusiastic about playing at the Acoustic Cafe and one of the questions they always ask is “Can we play at the next one?”  Well you need to speak to Jamie Murphy about that but I am pretty sure it won’t be long before we see you all again. Well done to all of you 

Left Nut Jack and the Square Needles

Left Nut Jack and the Square Needles describe themselves as a  five piece alternative instrumental band.  

Now this was something completely different and quite amazing.  The group was made up of five friends from Launceston college who claim to be unable to sing so prefer to stick with playing instruments. The members of the group are Jack Grime on trumpet, Will Samuels on saxophone, Phil Leslie on bass, Duncan Whale on guitar and Olly Simons on cajon drum

They played one original song called “Easy” and cover versions of “feeling good” (Michael Buble), “By the way” (Red Hot Chilli Pepers), ”She said” (Plan B) and “I feel Good”  Left Nut Jack and the Needles are obviously a popular group of lads judging by the crowd of enthusiastic followers that accompanied them to Jericho’s

When chatting with Jack on Face book after the event he asked me  ”Who do I speak to about doing next months one at the cafe? and then said “I hope they will have us again as it was so good on Thursday night.  We loved it.”
Going by the huge round of applause as they finished their set I think you will definitely be back. Well done guys.

Hannah and the Madding Crowd

Hannah and The Madding Crowd are from the Okehampton area and have been playing at festivals, concerts and gigs for a number of years. They have been the support band for many well known acts including  Al Stewart, Kathryn Tickell,  Julie Felix, Roy Harper and Roy Wood.
Graham describes their style of music as indie-folk and acoustic-pop. 

Graham Crocker plays lead guitar, mandolin, slide guitar and vocals, he is also Hannah’s Dad and  Phil’s Father in Law. Hannah Power sings the lead vocals and is  a songwriter. She is also Graham’s daughter and Phil’s wife. Phil Power is the rhythm guitarist, sings vocals and is a songwriter.  Phil is also Hannah’s husband and Graham’s Son in Law.

 On this occasion they played three of their own songs called “Turn to me”, “From the Sun” and “Free Spirit”. They also performed their own cover versions of  “Closer to Fine” (Indigo Girls, “Lucy in the Sky” (Beatles), (Which got people singing along with great gusto), Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell), Attention (The Waifs) and 15 Years (The Levellers).

Robbie is a talented keyboard player and singer from the Penzance area.

Robbie is also a recent new member of the popular local band called “Six is Out”

Robbie has been studying for his music degree at Truro College where he met Jamie and the other members of Six is Out. They were impressed with his musical abilities and was invited to join the group

Robbie performed solo on his cover versions of  ”Ain’t no sunshine”, “High and dry”and “Easy”, and then Jamie joined in on guitar for “Human nature”, Don’t stop the music” and “Free falling”

This was an impressive act by Robbie and Jamie and delighted all of the people in the room. Well done to both of you.

Robin Vizard

Robin Vizard at Launceston's Acoustic Cafe

Robin Vizard is a singer/songwriter and musician from St Agnes in Cornwall and a bit of a legend down that neck of the woods. Robin appeared on his own this evening but is sometimes accompanied by other musicians performing as  The Robin Vizard Band.

Robin’s songs are a mixture of  folky pop and based on a personal view of the irony of everyday life and written with an underlying twist of humour that makes one wonder about ordinary daily events and raises the question, What is the sense of it all?

His songs include titles such as “Easy Come, Easy Go”,  ”Sadie’s a Lady”,  ”Falling Apart at the Seams”, “A Million Ways”, “Down All the Days”,  ”Captain Zero”, “Slow Motion”, “Doing My Head In”, “Bipolar Bear”, “Stornaway” and “Puma in the Shed”

A brief roundup of the Acoustic Cafe in Liberty House Launceston on 29th July 2010

 This event was extremely well supported by many talented artists covering a wide range of musical styles to suit the varying taste’s of the large crowd of people who came to listen.

Mel and voluntary staff served up huge amounts of  Lamb Moussaka and Vegetarian Goulash main course and a choice of Banoffee Pie or Cheese Cake for dessert.

The people who sat upstairs were able to watch and listen to the the acts as they played, via the video camera link which projected  live video feed onto a large screen.  Many people commented on this feature and they all thought it was a brilliant idea. I have to agree.

Jamie Murphy did a brilliant job of organising the event and Mike Osborne excelled as usual on the mixing desk. The sound quality upstairs and downstairs was spot on.

The Acoustic Cafe, held at Jericho’s on the last Thursday of every month.

This was another wonderful evening of quality entertainment. Thanks to everybody who helped to make this the very successful event  it was.

Rita Hosking on UK Tour

Visits no8 Cafe in Launceston

Rita Hosking, a powerful singer/song writer and her talented  husband Sean, performed to another packed house at No8 cafe in Launceston on Thursday 22nd July.

Rita and Sean from Davis in North California share a passion for playing Americana, folk, country and bluegrass music. Rita Hosking’s first taste of singing began as a child at the local church and her first musical instrument was a good old fashioned washboard.

A lot has happened since then and three years ago Rita gave up her job as school teacher to take up her musical career full time. She has won several awards and her albums are continually receiving much attention. I think you made a good choice Rita.

Rita has played at many festivals and concerts in America and is currently on tour in the UK.

This was Rita’s first visit to the UK and it was a special time for her down here in Cornwall because Rita’s great grandfather was a Cornish miner who travelled to America along with many others a long time ago to try out their mining skills in California. These Cornish immigrants to America became known as Cousin Jacks. Cousin Jack is also the name given to Rita’s support band.

Rita told a brief story before beginning each song which gave meaning and understanding to the lyrics. These consisted of the memories of her childhood days and the simple rural life as it was for her, growing up in Montgomery Creek in the mountains of Shasta County in North California. Inhabitants of Montgomery Creek were known as “Monkey Crickers” She told us.

Her albums are like a diary of events telling a tale of forest fires, the loss of family, friends, the struggle for survival, a near death experience, pain and fear, all turned into song, and sung with such passion and feeling that I could almost see a tear  in her eyes as she sang.

One of her songs “Cool Black Water” reflects on the fear of bad news when having a loved one working deep underground in the coal mines doing a very dangerous job to provide for the needs of the family.

“Are You Ready” came to her as a question of choice; Live or Die? In her mind, as she lay in a coma, her answer was no.

The song “Kitchen Table and Chairs” was born of discussion about  what should be saved in the event of the potentially devastating  forest fires which occurred in the area, encroaching on the family home.

For Rita all the feelings and emotions she has experienced throughout  her life carry the seeds of song which she is then able to develop and share in her own special way with people from all over the world.

Rita’s influences are many but perhaps the greatest were the traditional songs sang by her grandparents to the family at christmas time, and inspired by the ordinary everyday lessons of life in a small town rural community.

Rita’s husband Sean Feder accompanied her with backing vocals, banjo and dobro. Sean also plays percussion and bass guitar, and is a member of the group “Country Jack”. Sean kindly explained to me a little about the dobro which he played.A fascinating instrument with a wonderful sound in the hands of  someone like Sean.

Launceston Cafe Scientifique
 in Jerichos Brasserie in Launceston

Cafe Scientifique has been growing since 1998 and now has over forty cafes across the country. Jerichos of Launceston now fills the gap between Redruth and Exeter

This is the launch night of Cafe Scientifique Launceston and guests are invited to listen to a talk by Colin Webb, Emeritus Professor of Laser Physics, Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College, University of Oxford,  and Chairman Oxford Lasers Ltd. In January 2000 Colin was awarded an MBE for services to the UK Laser Industry so I guess Colin knows what he is talking about

The subject title of the talk is The Light Fantastic – lasers for science, industry and medicine.

It was 50 years ago in May the laser was first used with any success so it seems appropriate that the talk is an introduction to the history, properties and the use of lasers in manufacturing, measuring and medicine including treatment of cancer and sight problems.

If you have ever considered laser treatment for eyesight problems this could be a fantastic opportunity to get some answers to your questions.

The evening is designed to be an informal talk with discussion and  not a lecture. Which means all members of the public are invited to attend and feel free to ask questions and raise relative points of interest.

The evening starts at 7 pm and  there will be a break during the evening for coffee and cakes after which the discussion will begin.

The next Cafe Scientifique in September covers the topics of  Mathematics, Magic and the Electric  guitar which should interest some of the  many talented musicians in the Launceston and surrounding areas

An entertaining night out in Launceston

An entertaining night out in Launceston on Thursday 22nd July.

If you would like a cheap night out and have a good laugh this could be the perfect chance to indulge in some funny stories, uplifting tales or just some cracking jokes. Everyone is invited to share something, be it poetry, a favourite passage from a book or perhaps to tell an inspirational tale. Do you want to spread a message? This is a perfect opportunity for you.

If you would like to take part, simply turn up and take a turn at the mike. Have a think about something you would like to say and have a go. Recite it, read it or just make it up as you go

Coffee, tea, soft drinks and a choice of Mels delicious home made sweet and sticky cakes will be available from behind the bar. You are invited to bring your own alcohol if you wish.

Jerichos is found in Liberty House which is the old Liberal Club of Launceston. It is between the Job Centre and the Bell Inn in Northgate Street. Opposite the Central Methodist Chapel.

Very popular covers band Six is Out play at Jerichos in Launceston

 Six is Out

Tonight at Jerichos in Launceston the well known and very popular band called “Six is Out” will be playing their own versions of some of their favourite artist’s tracks.

I was lucky enough to sit in during rehearsals on Thursday evening and I can tell you they will blow your socks off!
